Bring your domain with you

The domain moves. Your website, hosting and email can keep using the same DNS while the registrar changes.

You will need an auth code

Also called an EPP or transfer code.

What is a domain transfer?

A domain transfer moves the registration of a domain from one registrar to another. Your website files, hosting account and email do not move automatically, and the domain normally keeps its current nameservers. You unlock the domain, request an auth or EPP code, start the transfer with the new registrar, then approve it.

You need
Access to the current registrar, the domain owner email and the auth/EPP code.
Your website
Usually stays online because a transfer changes the registrar, not the hosting.
Best time
Start before the expiry date, while the domain is active and unlocked.
For .np domains
Registry rules differ. Contact us first so we can confirm the right process.

Before you start the transfer

Have these four things ready. They prevent most failed transfers and make it easier to keep your site online.

The domain is active

It should not be expired, suspended or in a redemption period. Renew it first if the current registrar shows an expiry warning.

You can receive owner emails

The approval message normally goes to the domain registrant or administrative contact. Check that inbox before you begin.

It is unlocked

Turn off the registrar lock or transfer lock. A locked domain will normally be rejected by the receiving registrar.

You have a backup plan

Save important DNS records and confirm where your website and email are hosted. We can help you check them before the transfer.

How to transfer a domain to us

The exact buttons differ between registrars, but the transfer itself follows the same order.

Ask us before you start
  1. Check the domain and expiry date

Log in to your current registrar and confirm the domain is active, paid for and not inside a transfer restriction period. Do not wait until the expiry date.

  2. Unlock the domain

Find the registrar lock, domain lock or transfer lock setting and turn it off. The exact label differs between registrars. Leave the domain nameservers as they are.

  3. Request the auth code

Ask for the domain's auth code, EPP code or transfer code. It may appear in the domain settings, arrive by email, or require a request to the registrar's support team.

  4. Start the transfer with us

Send us the domain name and its auth code through the secure transfer process. We check the code and tell you if anything else is needed.

  5. Approve the transfer

Watch the registrant email and current registrar account for an approval request. Approve it when it arrives, then we monitor the transfer until it completes.

Where to find your auth code

An auth code is a short security code issued by your current registrar. It proves that you are allowed to move the domain. You may see it called an EPP code, transfer code, auth-info code or authorization code.

Keep it private. Treat the code like a password. Share it only through the transfer request or with the registrar you are moving to. Do not publish it in a support forum or send it to an unknown caller.

Typical registrar steps

  1. 1Sign in to the company where the domain is registered.
  2. 2Open the domain management or domain settings page.
  3. 3Turn off the domain/transfer lock if it is enabled.
  4. 4Look for Get auth code, EPP code, Transfer code or Request code.
  5. 5Copy the code exactly, including capital letters, numbers and hyphens.

The setting may be under Domain, Security, Transfer or Advanced settings. If you cannot find it, ask your current registrar for the domain’s authorization/EPP code.

What changes, and what stays the same?

A registrar transfer is not the same thing as moving your website. It changes who manages the registration record; it does not copy your site or change your hosting by itself.

What changes

  • The registrar managing the domain
  • Where you renew and manage contact details
  • The client area you use for domain settings

What stays the same

  • Your website files and hosting account
  • Your email inboxes and mail provider
  • Your nameservers and DNS records, unless you change them

After the transfer finishes

A quick handover check keeps the domain safe and your website connected.

  1. Check the transfer completed

The domain should appear in your Baddas Cloud client area. We will tell you if the current registrar needs another approval.

  2. Confirm nameservers and DNS

Make sure the nameservers still point to the service hosting your website and email. Do not change them without checking where your DNS is managed.

  3. Turn on the domain lock again

After the transfer completes, check the new registrar settings and enable the transfer lock when you are not moving the domain.

  4. Note the next renewal date

The transfer receipt and client area show the updated registration details. Keep your payment method and owner email current so future renewals go smoothly.

Domain transfer questions, answered

Auth codes, locks, DNS, timing and what happens to your website and email.

Will my website go offline during a domain transfer?

Usually no. A transfer changes the registrar, not your hosting, website files or nameservers. Your site and email should continue working as long as the domain stays active and its DNS records are not changed. We check the DNS setup with you before starting.

What is an auth code or EPP code?

An auth code is a security code from your current registrar that authorises a transfer. It is also called an EPP code, transfer code, auth-info code or authorization code. Copy it exactly and share it only through the receiving registrar’s secure transfer process.

Where do I get my domain auth code?

Sign in to your current registrar, open the domain settings and look for Get auth code, EPP code or Transfer code. Some registrars display it immediately; others email it to the domain owner or ask support to release it.

Why is my domain transfer locked?

The domain may have its transfer lock enabled, may be recently registered or transferred, may have a recent owner-contact change, or may be expired or suspended. Turn off the lock where allowed and contact the current registrar if the restriction is not clear.

Do I need to change my nameservers?

No, not for the transfer itself. Keep the current nameservers if your website and email already work. Change nameservers only when you intentionally want the domain to use different DNS or hosting.

Can I transfer an expired domain?

An expired domain may need to be renewed with the current registrar before it can transfer. A domain in redemption or pending deletion can require a different recovery process, so contact us before paying for a transfer.

How long does a domain transfer take?

The time depends on the extension, the current registrar and how quickly the owner approves the request. Approving the transfer as soon as the email arrives helps. We monitor the status and tell you if an action is needed.

Can I transfer a .com.np or .np domain?

Nepal registry domains can follow different rules from .com, .net and .org domains. Contact us with the exact domain first so we can confirm whether a registrar transfer is available or whether the registry process applies.

.com.np domain guide

What if I cannot find the auth code?

Check the domain settings, search the current registrar’s help centre for EPP or transfer code, and confirm the owner email address. If it is still missing, ask the current registrar to issue or send the code. We can help you identify what to ask for.

Can you move my hosting and email too?

A domain transfer only moves the registration. If you also want to move your website, databases or email, ask about free website migration separately. We will plan the DNS change so the old service stays online until the new one is ready.
